Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mental Health OT?

Occupational Therapists specialising in mental health employ a multifaceted approach to support individuals in understanding and managing their daily functioning. Drawing upon a diverse range of psychological and occupational therapy strategies, Mental Health OTs assist clients facing various challenges, from grief and adjustment to severe and complex mental health conditions.

At its core, Mental Health Occupational Therapy is about empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Through strengths-based, goal-directed interventions, OTs facilitate improved mental health and well-being, enabling clients to engage in meaningful activities and roles that resonate with their personal values and aspirations.

The practical, recovery-focused approach used by occupational therapists addresses not only an individual’s diagnosis but also how they experience mental illness and its impact on daily life. This includes their ability to work, manage household responsibilities, participate in schooling, sleep, engage in personal care, and interact with others.

What can I expect in my first session?

Initial sessions can take 60 to 90 minutes and are usually held in the clinic or at times in your home (depending on purpose of assessment). Follow up sessions can be held online.

At the first session your OT will ask about:

  • Your main presenting concerns

  • Your current capacities, what you are able to do and what you would like to achieve

  • Daily routine and habits which can support or reduce functional capacities.
